The first 'thing' I discovered after endless hours of worry, when I heard of some bloggers who'd lost their whole blog sites. I went searching to find someway of keeping a permanent record of our blog, with the view of getting it printed off and bound. After many hours of searching I came across a site called WinHTTRack, that enables you to download and store on your PC your entire blog. I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to computer stuff, but I manged to stumble through the software and now have a 500+ megabyte file of this blog site. To get the whole blog I went back into the archives and copied and pasted the first post url and let the software do the rest. It took a bloody long time to download the lot, but now I know I have all of my blog on file. My next step is to find some way of printing and binding it.
A few weeks back I had a 'thing' attach itself to Internet Explorer, meaning that even though I have Norton Anti-virus and stacks of other security, these dam adverts kept popping up. So I un-installed Internet Explorer and installed Firefox, which up until now, seems to be bug free. Anyway, while switching browsers, as my good buddy Shoshana spotted, I lost my counter, which was just passed the 21,000 mark. try as I might, I just couldn't get it up and running again, but found another 'thing' that is really cool. It's called Google Analytics and tells you heaps of stuff about who looks at your site, where in the world they are and heaps of stuff like that. Even though I've only had it on the site for a couple of weeks, I spend hours looking at where and how people navigate this blog.
Being pretty new to Australia, once I see a place name on my Google Analytics page, I then head over to Google Maps to see where abouts in Australia, or in fact the world our readers are. It's not intrusive stuff or anything, you don't actually find out peoples addresses, but it's nice to get a rough idea of where in the world people are from. Plus, just checking the Sydney readers has helped me work out where is where in this big city.
And finally, I discovered another piece of free stuff called CCleaner that, well cleans up your whole PC and makes it run faster, plus loads of other stuff. I use it every other day and it's amazing.
So yeah, that's some of the geeky stuff I do when not posting. I think I need a hobby eh!

That was all very interesting Lee, thanks. I use Firefox too. As for your map locator, my boys primary school has one on their website (www.russley.school.nz) and it is very interesting to see just where people are navigating from isn't it?
Love the photo with ALL THAT WASHING in the background! I hope it all got dry for you!
Charlie.
Hey Charlie,
I'll go check out the boys site when Jarvee is asleep.
The washing, all 15 loads of it, did all dry nicely, as we are having a really nice run of hot weather. I dont think we've seen any rain for nearly two weeks now. Just sun, sun and more sun. Just like chch aye ;o)
Lee
Oh yeah, just like chch! Actually the high over Sydney is also sitting over Chch so can't really complain there. But can complain about our red and blacks. Pity they off to Sth Africa, who would have thought the Bulls would inihilate the Reds like they did? Grrrrrr. Fingers crossed for a Blues/Crusaders final Ah?
Charlie.
Yep a Crusaders vs. Blues final would be great, even better would be if the chch smog stayed away this time!
