Non-Depressed Dad

I've convinced Adrienne to start taking the train to work, as the buses are not that reliable in the evening, and we can never know exactly when our favourite person will be home. Plus Jarvis and I get to drive Adrienne to and from the station which, is quite exciting, as we get to meet her off the train, as we did tonight.

At ten this morning, Jarvis and I went to our local play group, a place we've not been to a while. On the way, Jarvis kept picking up sticks and making X's on the floor (see pic below), which means that underneath is buried pirate treasure. As Jarvis played at play group, I sat in the sandpit talking to some Mum's and the conversation came round to how they felt bored and unchallenged in the day and felt depressed at times. I've always been very open about suffering with depression and told them of my condition and how I manage it. So below the pictures of Adrienne going off to work this morning and Jarvis' pirate X's, I've posted some pictures of the things that I use to keep on top of my depression, which are:

1. My antidepressant tablets which are pretty mild. I've learnt that I can't get by for a great length of time without them. I can of course survive without them, but they make life for my family and friends better when I'm on them.
2. I've just started taking vitamin B, as another sufferer in the family has told me to give them ago, as they apparently help with moods. I've only been on them for 2-days, so can't say whether they help or not, but I can say that they make my wee yellow!
3. I love going to the movies and coupled with having some wonderful movie buddies in Tieia, Sally and Katherine, I get to see some great flicks and have some stimulating conversation afterwards. Luckily, my movies buddies are all VERY intelligent (why they hang with me, I'm not sure?) and not really into mainstream stuff, so we do get so see some great art-house stuff. Saying that, the odd Hollywood blockbuster like, say Casino Royale is worth going to.
4. Running is something that I've taken up recently and although I struggle to get out of bed and force myself to run every morning at 5.30am, I know that It's good for my health and mind. I'm also going to do the City to Surf this year which is a good target to aim for.
5. I know I go on about The All-Blacks and The Crusaders, but I love to watch rugby and it's not such a bad thing to have a passion about something is it?
6. Reading is something that I've only got into in the last couple of years since becoming a House Dad. I never get to read in the daytime, but reading before I sleep, really helps. I only EVER read non-fiction, especially books on British comedians. And today, my dear sister Stephanie (Nefni) sent me Vic Reeves' Me:Moir for my birthday. Thank you Nefni, I'm blessed to have such a wonderful sister...love you heaps x
7. Music has always been such a passion for me and I love such a wide range of music. I'm currently listening to Jarvis Cocker, Midlake, Just Jack, Nick Drake and as always, Gomez.
8. And finally, my life is my family. I love them more than I'd ever thought it was possible to love. My son is full-on, but he makes me laugh 99% of the day and my wife Adrienne is my rock, strong, beautiful and my reason for living.

So there you go, those are the things, along with great friends and family that get me by. It's not too bad eh?

House Dad :o)

You had a birthday? Well, Happy Birthday HouseDad.

I can't wait to get back to running after I am done breastfeeding. I love it. It's a good way to be in shape and it makes me nice and very accomplished afterwards.
