After leaving Louise and Michael to enjoy the rest of their weekend, we came home and changed into our gardening cloths to tackle the our mammoth lawn and give it, it's first mow. Jarvis and I had done our prep and made sure that they electric mower that we bought over from New Zealand with us, was in working order. Sadly, I forgot to raise the wheels before starting the mower up and cutting the first section, with the result being a section of lawn taken down to it's roots...bugger!
I thought that Jarvis would be able to mow the lawn with me, but his only real fear in life is loud machinery, so the noise of the mower made him a little nervous. However the sight of a pair of very dangerous grass cutting shears was of major interest. Of course, I'd never let him loose with them on his own, well not until he's 3 at least, so we cut the edges together. He really enjoyed doing the edges and it was a lovely feeling doing something like this with my little man in my arms.
After we had finished cutting our MEGA 2.5 x 2.5 lawn, a task that took all of 5-minutes from start to finish, we jumped the fence and did our neighbour Scott's lawn too. Scott is a great guy and has said that he'll make a seat for Jarvis swing tomorrow. I'm glad of that, as I can see that a piece of thick rope just hanging from the tree, is quite a hazard. Ever the worrier me.
Our last jobs were to pile up all the cutting and put them under Scott's lemon tree and under the maple in the front yard and then repair the part of the lawn I stuffed with a mixture of top soil and builders sand. I'm sure it'll come right as it's a pretty hardy variety of lawn. Jarvis helped spread the repair mixture and then as a bonus decided that the grass clippings would look better spread back on the lawn. It's not what I wanted, but luckily it covered the repaired area with something green as opposed to the black soil - good thinking Jarvee.
House Dad.
